The Challenge:
According to the Maryland State Department of Education, the dropout rates among students enrolled in Maryland public schools increased by 0.5% to 14.2% in 2023. Many of these young people suffer the disadvantage of broken homes and other adverse factors leading to poor grades, behavior issues, absenteeism, drug abuse, and crime. For many, there is no escape from the cascading consequences of their decisions.
A Solution:
Under the leadership of the National Guard Youth Challenge Program, the Maryland Freestate ChalleNGe Academy provides an opportunity to change lives through a non-traditional school setting focused on ingraining self-discipline, leadership, and personal responsibility into the hearts and minds of at-risk high school students while they work to obtain their high school diploma or equivalency.
A Collective Effort
Overcoming this challenge requires a collective effort from schools, teachers, parents, community organizations, government, and ordinary citizens that refuse to ignore the potential every young man and woman has to contribute to our society as productive citizens leading fulfilling lives.
Established in 2007 the Maryland National Guard Youth Challenge Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit volunteer organization formed to build community awareness while providing resources and advocacy to the Maryland National Guard Freestate Challenge Academy.
